Meet Jesus

There's someone else I want you to meet.

He won't be mentioned in every post on this blog but he's important enough to have this page wholly dedicated to him.

He is the person of Jesus.

There's so much I could say about Him, so much I could tell you about what He did when He lived on Earth and the impact He had on those around Him. There is truly no one else like Him.

You might be wondering why I'm introducing you to him.

I wanted to have this introduction here so that you could come here if you ever became more curious about the person of Jesus. My hope and prayer is that you would meet Jesus for yourself and would see Him in all His glory.

Who is He?

Here is a quick look at who Jesus is through animation.

Video from Bible Project

For a more detailed overview of his life, you can read one of the four books mentioned in the video. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, aka the gospels are all eye-witness accounts written about Jesus by different people. While these accounts may be slightly different from one another, they all record the same key pieces of information about Jesus.

Here is my compilation of some of that information from the gospel of Luke (please note that this is an ongoing list and will be updated as I continue to make my way through Luke):

  • Before Jesus was born, an angel Gabriel appeared to Mary telling her she would conceive and give birth to a son. Mary was confused as she was a virgin. Jesus would not be conceived through normal means but through the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:26-31, 34-35).
  • The angel Gabriel told Mary that Jesus would be great and would be called the Son of the Most High and the Son of God (Luke 1:32, 25).
  • Mary and Joseph were on their way to Bethlehem, the town of David, to register for the census when she gave birth to Jesus. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger because there were no guest rooms available (Luke 2:6-7).
  • An angel appeared to the shepherds in the field and told them that a Saviour had been born in the town of David. This was the Messiah, the Lord. The angel told them that he would be wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger (Luke 2:11-12).
  • As a Jew, Jesus was circumcised as a baby (Luke 2:21) and dedicated to the Lord (Luke 2:22-24).
  • It had been revealed to a man named Simeon by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord's Messiah. When Jesus was brought to Jerusalem, Simeon took him into his arms and praised God. (Luke 2:22-32).
  • Every year, Jesus and his family participated in the Jewish festival known as the Festival of the Passover in Jerusalem. When he was 12, they returned home without him. He was found in the temple courts, sitting with the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions (Luke 2:41-50).
  • When Jesus was baptised, heaven opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in the form of a dove. A voice came from heaven and said, "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased" (Luke 3:21-22).
  • Jesus began to teach in the synagogues (Luke 4:15). He used His authority and power to drive out the demon inside a man (Luke 4:31-37) and healed many people with various kinds of sickness (Luke 4:38-43).
  • He said that His goal and mission was to share the good news of the kingdom of God to the people (Luke 4:43).
  • Jesus had compassion for the sick, the suffering and for those who were excluded by society. He healed a man covered with leprosy (Luke 5:13), a paralysed man (Luke 5:24-25) and ate with a tax collector named Levi (Luke 5:27-32).

What's really interesting is the author Luke's motivation for writing this orderly account of Jesus' life. It says in Luke 1:3-4 that he had 'carefully investigated everything from the beginning' and had written this account so that Theophilus (the recipient of this) would 'know the certainty of the things (they) have been taught'. I think this can also apply to us if we are investigating the person of Jesus, who He is and the claims that He makes.

May you also find certainty in the things that have been said about Jesus as you seek out the truth.
